Retire To Thailand Knowledge Base
Do Americans ever retire in poorer countries such as China or Thailand, because they can live like kings...? For instance, I went to Thailand two summers ago and it was great! Food was delicious, 4-star hotels cost only around $30 USD per night or less, and you could get a 2-hour massage for $6 USD! (In America, a 2-hour massage would easily cost $160+!) So of course I got to thinking, why don't people just work for a little while and make some money, then go and retire in Thailand? Do people do this? It seems like people don't do it unless they're in the army and happened to be stationed there for a long time, or some reason like that.
Retire in Thailand? Is it economically advisable for an American to retire in Thailand? What are Immigration requirements (i.e., how long am I allowed to stay on a tourist visa)? Are apartments or condo's reasonably priced near the ocean, etc.?
Planning to retire soon and live in Thailand.? Where the retired people live in Thailand? How much money would be enough for one month living expenses? I would get $1000.00 US a month. I'd like to live in a quiet nice place by the sea.
Can i get investor/retired status in thailand if i got a few million baht to invest? My boyfrind and I wanna settle in thailand after we marry. We just wanna stay together in a nice country together, by some residence or long term visa. We are both retired in sense we dont need to work or do a job in thailand. We both are indians and just wanna stay in a nice country long term. we dont want a work visa anywhere. we rather just give some money and get a residence/retirement visa in any country..including thailand. I heard somewhere that you can get a retirement visa in thailand if u got loads of money and are above 50 yrs. However, we both are about 30 years, so i was wondering if we just invest a bit of money in thailand and stay there with some investor/retired status visa? any advice? only real life experiences please. if u have managed to get a similar status stay it would be helpfull if you could give us a detailed reply. thanks
Expats: Have you ever been fearful/afraid while living in Thailand? I just read an online news about a 'farang' being kidnapped by crooked cops and other 'farang' mafia brothers and just wonder if you ever fear of such similar incidents might ever happen to you. It just expresses of my husband's concerns about moving back to Thailand. His concern is that it would be like having a bull's eye on his back since he's a 'farang' and local crooks might target him/us as 'loaded'. Of course, we never live our lives with a 'show-off' attitude but we wish to own a house, drive a car (compact car; no benz), and I will do all housework myself (no maid). But people at the bank will know us. What's about the immigration office where your info is so easily obtained by a crooked cop (former immigration officer)? What's about your neighbors? With this news I read, I am kinda having a second thought about retiring in Thailand. Any insights? Note: My husband and I visited Thailand several times. I've been away from the Thailand I knew over 20 years. We've never been in any shady business. As for if my husband ever stepped on anybody's foot (figure of speech), no he has not. He's concerned about our safety since a 'farang' seems to be an easy target to be conned. It seems Thais think most farangs got money. Ridiculously untrue. However, it's almost like a redistribution of wealth is ok in the eyes of some crooks.
Is it legal to retire in Cuba? I'm a retiree looking for a place to live outside the US. I'm considering Thailand, but I've heard that Cuba is a good place also. But, if you move to Cuba, and live there, will that put you in hot water with the US government when you come back to the States to visit family?
I am gay and 40 and I am going to Thailand for a few months. I have never been to Thailand before ...? ... as we all know the gay scene in the west can be quite diecriminatory to men over 40. Someone said to me that gay Thai men actually like guys over 40 and that it isn't an 'issue' over there. Is this true. I am quite young for my age (40) but even so, many of us in the USA feel over-the-hill and overlooked by a USA gay scene that is very competitive and discriminatory. I have just eneded a very long term relationship and hate to feel I may be on the shelf. I have retired early and may even be able to retire to Thailand. Will I have a chance at new love in Thailand as a reasonably good looking 40+ year old? I have read this 'don't fall in love with a Thai' advice so many times! Are they that adorable? It's obviously a problem that many westerners fall head over heels with Thai men and women! What is the reason for this? I have read this 'don't fall in love with a Thai' advice so many times! Do you think it will be an advantage to make my Thai wedding legal in my home country? I am getting married in Thailand soon, i am Australian, she is Thai. I have read on the internet about making my Thai marriage 'legal' so the Aust goverment recognize the marriage. But after speaking to someone who is retiring in Thailand soon it sounds like i may have to bribe a lot of people in Thailand for this to happen? And my fiance phoned up the Embassy in Bangkok to ask about this, they told her they don't know how we can do this!!?? Any help would be greatly apprieciated. :o)

Where can you retire on $25,000 a year? I'm retired, and headed for divorce (it's inevitable). I already have a pretty good indicaiton that after the divorce I'll be able to generate about $25k annually. I'm 55 years old and in declining health. I'd hoped to go to Thailand, but now I'm not so sure I'll have the assets for living expenses. What are some other countries where an expat American can live with a low income and have a decent quality of life?

Does anyone know of a remote area in Panama in the high interior where one can retire on $1,022 a month? Age 66, trying to find a perminant area to live on SS retirement. Need a low cost rental for starters. Not looking for company, although I'm not against a female companion with like minded interests. For starters, I'm more concerned to find a nice enviornment and a peaceful place to live. I've been residing in Thailand off and on for the past 4 years, but the new military regeim has tightened up the visa requirements, and I cannot afford to travel back and forth to the US every three months. Would appreciate any advice from anyone with personal knowledge of such areas in Panama, Central America. Thanks, Alan

Thailand or America? This question is in this catagory because there's not an exact one for this question, and as well I'm seeking friendly advice from fellow friends of Q&A: For the past decade I have lived in Thailand. Now, at 34 (and recently just turned 34) the question arises ''Go now or stay forever?" I am not married, no children...and I have my ups and downs here, just as anyone may have anywhere...yet I wonder if I should be concerned about one day needing to retire. Are there private retirement agencies that have a plan towards one's retirement if not working in thier own country? My taxes are so always excempt...so there won't be anything to draw from in the 'Golden Years'. Finding love would be impossible for me in Thailand...yet possible in America, however that is not a main concern, yet a reality to consider. I simply cannot decide..and answers of 'which place makes you most happy' does not help.If I knew, it would be decided. I'm wondering: If any of you had a choice, which+why?

Where to live for early retirement? Does anyone have any suggestions for cheap places for a Canadian to make an early retirement to? I'm considering China (Shanghai), Thailand, Argentina and Uruguay. Any suggestions on ways to estimate my living expenses in different countries or other cheap places to live (stretch a fixed income as far as possible)? Which country would you recommend retiring to and why? I'd want to have high-speed internet, air conditioning and my own living space (exclusive use of a kitchen and bathroom) at a minimum.
