best country to retire

I want to leave the U.S. any suggestions?

I'm 42 retired from one job but still working at another. I've come to the realization that I'm not working because I have to but because I've been conditioned to. I have everything I need and I don't have any wants--my idea of living is not owning some piece of suburbia and working like a slave to pay for it and buy more "stuff" and work until I'm in the grave. I make around $3,000.00 monthly from retirement and investment income and I also have a job--but I want to quit the job and find a place where I can comfortably live off the 3k per month. I've lived in Germany, Italy, Korea, Guam, and Jamaica over the years--but I'm ready to leave and start a life someplace, I just don't know where or how to get started. I've considered Belize, and Germany or the U.K. but I think with the money I'll have Europe may be out of the question--unless Russia or someplace in Eastern Europe. Anyone have ideas? if you've done this; how did you do it? it's just my wife and I this should be easy. Rigth?

  1. The USA is a free country, so we are told so you just book your fare to the destination of your choice and go.
  2. International Living is a great magazine for people looking to retire somewhere other than the US. It will answer all of your questions plus they have symposiums at various worldwide locations.
  3. what the guy above me said, also i highly recommend Korea, i came back from Korea about a week ago and i still miss being there dearly, it is absolutley beautiful and almost everything is in a day's drive since the country is so small
  4. I think you should move to Burundi, you would live like a king.
  5. Try the Philippines. With a disposable income like that, you and your wife can live comfortably. Language is not even a problem as English is a second language. Visit this site to find out more: http://www.philippine-retirement.com/
  6. i believe that first you need to be sure where you want to go. then research everything regarding owning property over there. if it was my choice i go for Barbados, just cause of the white sandy beaches, the peoples hospitality, and that beautiful weather. I'm from the Dominican Republic which is also an island and it is very cheap to live there, you buy your land you own it, not the government and your home is yours and there's no such thing as property taxes. I don't know if anything else applies. You can contact the consolate of the place where you want to go and ask what or where you need to go to be able to live there. be cautious on whom you trust, outside of the USA people think were millionaires and they might try to make u pay more than what is worth.
  7. Your income is sufficient to qualify for a long term visa amost anywhere...so that is not a problem. You need to chosse a place where your income will go the farthest so you don't have to live on a tight budget. But here is my biggest concern for you. I have seen others who retire young because they were able to, but once they got settled in, they were bored to death, became depressed, were just plain miserable. We all need a PURPOSE in life...our kids, family , career, a philanthropic pursuit...sitting around doing nothing leads to a whole lot of bickering and boredom. I have seen wealthy people who appeared to have no worries, but who were miserable because they retired young and had no direction in their lives. So... one factor you would be wise to consider is exactly WHAT will we do once we are settled in and actually retired? How will we spend our days and what will bring a sense of satisfaction and accomplishebt to our lives? I am retired on a modest pension, live in Mexico, have some simple, but satisfying goals and purposes in my daily life...and I am waaay happier than many richer folks I know. Hope you find what is right for you and that all works out well for you.
